Slide 19:
Trainer’s Notes:
This slide introduces the clinical and statistical context of Autism Spectrum Disorder —
essential for framing inclusion initiatives in a workplace setting.
Let’s explore the three key areas:
1. Definition
According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013), Autism Spectrum Disorder is:
“A complex developmental condition involving persistent challenges with social
communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviour.”
The important takeaway is that autism:
• Affects each person differently (spectrum)
• Is not a disease, but a neurological difference
• May be accompanied by co-occurring conditions like anxiety, sensory sensitivity, or
ADHD
2. Prevalence
The World Health Organization estimates that:
• Roughly 1 in 100 children worldwide is diagnosed with ASD
